Weight loss begins in your mind.

Successful dieters say that they finally made a commitment to weight loss when something happened which changed their view of themselves. Perhaps they saw themselves in a three-way mirror in a store's changing room, and realized that they'd gone beyond plump to FAT. Or a child made a nasty remark about their size. Or they lost their job, and realized that they would have a difficult task finding a new job if they didn't lose weight.

If you're fed up with being overweight you can make a commitment yourself to lose weight right now. Start by admitting to yourself that you're overweight, and that you CAN lose weight, and not only can you be thin - you WILL be thin.

Think Yourself Thin

Thinking yourself thin is easy: just start imagining what you would do if you were thin. Then start doing those things right now.

For example, if you've been putting off going back to school to get an advanced degree, get the information you need now, and make the arrangements.

One woman thought herself thin by renovating a house. She said: "It's something I've always wanted to do. I finally thought Why Not? And I started." By the time the house was remodeled, she was at the weight she wanted to be.

Another woman decided that she would go on a trip around the world alone when she lost weight. The world trip was a real motivator, and of course, by the time she was ready to leave on her trip, she had reached her goal weight.

Change What You Crave By Changing How You Think: The 5 Step Mental Method to Natural Weight Loss

If I were to ask you which foods temp you, most likely they wouldn't be ones that are very healthy. I bet they would be ice cream, potato chips, pizza, or something along those lines. In fact, in your mind right now as you're reading, you are probably thinking about a food that isn't healthy. Well, aren't you? Stop for a moment and think about it.................... The point I'm going to make in this article is that you can change what you crave by changing how you think. This is the key to natural weight loss.

Every new client that comes to my office for weight-loss has a "craving problem." But I don't see it as a problem at all. I see it as a solution. Cravings are over-rated. They are hodge-podge and we don't have to be controlled by them. We don't have to feel temped by ice cream, cookies or 20-ounce prime ribs. Instead, we can be tempted by watermelon, pineapple, oranges or apples; foods like that. Healthy weight loss exists. Think that sounds crazy? Well it isn't and you'll see why.

When I first sit down and talk with a client about their eating habits, I gather everything I need to know about exactly what they eat and how they eat. The culprit to their weight problem always boils down to snacking, picking, eating foods that are unhealthy or just plain over-eating. Then I'll ask them what fruits and vegetables they like. I'm yet to come across someone who hates fruit or hates every vegetable under the sun. Finally I'll ask them how often they eat fruits or vegetables and it's always a lot less often than the unhealthy stuff.

After I've gathered my arsenal of information, we do our thing. I'll have my clients lay back in my recliner and close their eyes. I'll direct their mind to a peaceful place, and within minutes they'll be relaxed like never before. Then I start talking about their favorite fruits and vegetables. I start pumping their mind with healthy weight loss suggestions. I'll ask them to imagine taking a bite of their favorite juicy, ripe fruit and to feel the juices tickling their taste buds. I'll say to their mind, "from now on anytime you have a craving for food, you will think of a juicy, ripe piece of fruit. And bingo!!! Next thing you know these are exactly the kinds of foods they start desiring, and the road to easy weight loss begins. Why? Because anytime you close your eyes and bring yourself to a calm, relaxed place, your subconscious mind emerges, and it is this part of the mind that controls what you crave. Change your thoughts and you'll change what you crave. You'll discover the key to natural weight loss.

Let's look at this from another perspective. Let's say pineapple is your favorite fruit. Now, if you were sitting with me right now and I gave you a juicy chunk of it, you would enjoy it thoroughly. And you'd want more, right? Of course. Now, let's say I reached into my refrigerator, whipped-out a piece of chocolate cake and said, "choose one." Most likely you would opt for the pineapple because you just had a teaser-piece, which would make your mind want more. The fact of the matter is this: you enjoy your favorite fruits just as much as you enjoy your favorite junk foods, you just believe otherwise.

Again, cravings are over-rated. The mere mention of that devilish word always seems to conjures-up images of high calorie, high fat foods only because these are the foods you are most exposed to in our media driven world. Your subconscious gets accustomed to this and just doesn't know any better. Change your minds images and you will change your cravings and discover not only natural weight loss but easy weight loss. Here's a quick 5 minute mental exercise you can begin doing now to help you start changing the way you crave food.

Step 1: Find a comfortable, quiet place where there are no distractions. Begin breathing deeply until you are quite relaxed. Next, count backwards from 10-1, slowly. With each count, imagine that your mind is drifting deeper and deeper.

Step 2: After you have finished counting, imagine that you are relaxing by yourself in your favorite place. A secluded beach or a log in the woods will do the trick. Imagine yourself feeling so very relaxed and peaceful.

Step 3: Next, imagine a basket full of your favorite fresh picked fruit sitting right next to you. See it clearly in your mind, the color, the feel, everything about that fruit. Imagine taking a bite of that juicy fruit and enjoying it like never before.

Step 4: Repeat the following suggestion to yourself 10 times: "From now on, anytime I think of eating, I immediately feel a craving for fruit."

Step 5: Count from 1 to 5, slowly, and when you reach 5 open your eyes.

Simple Food Substitutions to Help Your Weight Loss

One challenge to planning a health menu for weight loss is choosing and cooking foods with flavor. Of course, many of the foods we enjoy are quite flavorful, yet in an age where bolder is perceived as better we may not always sense the crisp zing of a carrot or broccoli spear on our taste buds. So conditioned are we, too, that it may be impossible for some to enjoy a slice of toast without slathering it with butter! Melted cheese on veggies, shortening in cake recipes, little drips and drabs do pile up eventually, and can help pack on the pounds.

The one thing we all need to realize when eating, cooking, and planning healthy meals is that it is possible to induce bold flavors without introducing high-fat contents. Think about why so many people like fast food. It does taste good, and the flavor is plentiful. Yet, if you have ever seen how hamburgers and French fries are prepared at your favorite chain restaurant, you will quickly see why. Note the huge, cylindrical salt shaker by the fry station, and another one by the grill. Note the giant white blocks of shortening dumped into the vats just before breaded chicken and fish is set down to cook. These ingredients contribute greatly to the flavor of your meal, but unfortunately they also raise the fat content.

If you are concerned about what goes in your food to add flavor, yet are not wholly willing to cut out the condiments, there's no need to worry. Next time you open the pantry, consider these simple substitutions to help cut the caloric and fat content of your meals.

Applesauce Instead of Butter

You're baking a cake and cringing at the instructions on the box: mix in one stick of butter. It's enough that you're going to add frosting and candy sprinkles, but you can feel your arteries hardening at the prospect of enjoying a slice. Well, did you know that if you substitute one cup of applesauce for every cup of butter in the recipe you can bring down the cake's fat content without altering the flavor of the cake? Give it a try and see if you can tell the difference. This simple substitution could cut as much as 900 calories from the whole cake!

As for the sugary frosting, why not create your own using a store brand marshmallow creme? While not a health food, marshmallow creme is fat free and a better alternative than most frostings you'll find in the cake aisle.

While you're at it, applesauce makes a good butter substitute in the morning when you're reaching for that slice of toast. Try a bit on your bread for a light, sweet flavor.

Egg Whites for Whole Eggs

While you're baking that cake, take a look at how many eggs are required. Now, we've seen the commercials over the decades touting the wonders of the egg as a nutritional staple; indeed, we can't see having a good old fashioned American breakfast without eggs. Yet, for all the positive press, it doesn't change the fact that the yolk, while containing the bulk of the egg's nutrient value, is also the fattiest part. Added to your cake, breakfast plate, or stirred into your fried rice, you've just upped the content.

In order to cut the fat, separate your eggs and use two egg whites for each whole egg in cooking. While not as plentiful in nutrients as the yellow globe it encases, the egg white alone is an excellent source of protein and helpful amino acids. Scramble some eggs whites with lean turkey, or try an egg white omelette with veggies!

Cottage Cheese for Ricotta Cheese

If you love rich Italian cuisine, then you know some dishes just aren't complete with the aromatic, textured ricotta. Lasagna, tortelloni, canelloni...all are mouth-watering dishes, but the addition of ricotta does more than enhance the flavor, it enhances the fat content.

Cottage cheese, on the other hand, presents a lower fat alternative. Thickened with a touch of flour cottage cheese works well as a substitute in most dishes where the fattier cheese is required. Try it once, and you'll can mangia without guilt!

This means that you must EAT - even though you don't seem to be losing weight. Eating more, and more often, ensures that your metabolism keeps doing its job. So ensure that you have several small meals right throughout the day, with some protein at each meal. This will keep your metabolism high, and not only will you lose weight, but you'll look and feel great too.
